Campus Seeks Ideas on Future of Information Technology

UCSF continues to face daunting challenges with respect to information technology (IT). Competing priorities, definition of roles and responsibilities, as well as managing overall IT costs are just a few of these challenges.

UCSF has retained PricewaterhouseCoopers to assist the IT Strategic Planning Committee in developing an IT action plan. During the next several months, the committee will receive input from the UCSF community through a series of individual interviews and focus group meetings.

PricewaterhouseCoopers has scheduled a series of focus groups during December and early January in order to solicit information and ideas from a broad group of people on campus. Those interested in participating may contact the project office at 502-4465 or by email itplan@ovcaf.ucsf.edu.

The purpose of these meetings will be to:

  • better understand the current state of the IT environment, including current capability, capacity, and resources;
  • identify the gaps where the current IT environment is insufficient to meet the academic, administrative, and clinical computing needs of the geographically dispersed and programmatically diverse institution;
  • highlight the opportunities and constraints imposed on the IT planning process by the culture and environment at UCSF.

Although the original scope of this planning effort excluded the clinical activities of UCSF Stanford Health Care, this will change because of the recent announcement to dissolve the merger. When more is known, the scope of this Information Technology planning effort will be expanded to include the appropriate clinical and hospital activities

The IT Strategic Planning Steering Committee is co-chaired by Dan Stites, chair of the department of laboratory medicine and Steve Barclay, vice chancellor administration and finance.
