Unwinding the Merger -- A Message from the Chancellor

The following message from Chancellor J. Michael Bishop was sent this week to UCSF Stanford Health Care employees at the UCSF Medical Center.

I write to those employees of UCSF Stanford who expect to join/rejoin the UCSF community as the merger unwinds. I want you to know that your circumstances and welfare are very much on the minds of all the leadership at UCSF. I realize that the transaction costs of your transition to UCSF may be substantial in time, energy and emotion. I give you my assurance that we will do what we can to make the transition as smooth as possible. I have no doubt that there will be problems and disappointments along the way. I can only ask for your forbearance as we proceed. My great hope is that when the transition is complete, you will be satisfied members of the UCSF community, with renewed commitment to the splendid mission of our Medical Center.

All of you doubtless know that the UC Regents have approved dissolution of the merger as of March 1, 2000. The tasks to be accomplished between now and then are numerous and difficult. It is too early to offer many details, but I do understand your keen interest in knowing what your future employment, salary and benefit opportunities will be. We will work very hard in the next few weeks to communicate more of the details. We ask for your patience and goodwill during this trying time.

Our objective is to deal equitably and fairly with every individual, and we will want to know when we are falling short of that goal. To that end, I have asked the UCSF Human Resources department to establish immediately telephonic and Email hotlines so that you can seek advice or bring difficulties to our attention. I expect that this service will be available shortly. You will be notified when it is functional.

Nothing is more important to the success of an institution like the UCSF Medical Center than the loyalty of its staff. I know that your welfare has not been well served by the turmoil surrounding the merger. Yet you have continued to help provide world class health care. For that the entire community of UCSF is deeply grateful. We look forward to welcoming you to the UCSF fold.
