'Tis the Season for Sharing

Food barrels will abound around the campus beginning this week as UCSF helps the San Francisco Food Bank kick off its holiday drive to feed the hungry.

Through December 30, barrels will be located on Parnassus in: Millberry Union, at the Fitness Center outside the first-floor elevators and outside the game room; the Courtyard Café in the School of Nursing building; and the School of Dentistry lobby.

Barrels also are placed in the Mission Center Building lobby, the Laurel Heights lobby, and at the Prevention Sciences Group office at 74 New Montgomery.

Giving food is just one way that UCSF employees can help make the holidays a little brighter for those less fortunate.

For those who have time to give, the San Francisco Food Bank is looking for people to distribute turkeys and holiday boxes to needy families before Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving, the food bank needs help distributing food boxes, processing food requests, scheduling pickups and deliveries, and working in its warehouse at 900 Pennsylvania Ave.

"Every year we coordinate the delivery of about 2,000 boxes of food to different human service agencies in the city. This time of year we get a lot of community food donations and so we also have a need for food sorting," says Chris Sams, volunteer coordinator at the San Francisco Food Bank. To volunteer, call Sams at 282-1907, ext. 244, or email (csams@sffb.org).

To find out about other ways to help this season, get a copy of the 1999 Holiday Volunteer Opportunities, prepared by the Volunteer Center of San Francisco, a private, nonprofit organization that is a centralized source of volunteer information for the city.

Those too busy to volunteer may donate special items to human service agencies that have made their needs known in the 1999 Holiday Wish List, another booklet prepared by the Volunteer Center.

Both booklets are available by contacting Katherine Austin in the UCSF Public Affairs office at 502-5984 or email (kaustin@pubaff.ucsf.edu).

Here are some examples from the wish list:

  • Catholic Charities needs shampoos, perfumes, hair brushes and other grooming essentials for the Peter Claver Community, which offers subsidized housing and on-site support services on Golden Gate Avenue to previously homeless people.
  • Ben Franklin Middle School of San Francisco needs 600 new books for students in grades sixth through eighth.
  • Lavender Youth Recreation & Information Center, a place for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth, requests 35 millimeter cameras and a digital video camera for their clients, aged 25 and under, in their arts and media program.

For other ideas to make the season of sharing more special, log on to Homepage for the Holidays (www.helpakid.com/helpakid1999/). The website lists different ways to donate gifts or money to underprivileged children, seniors and families in the Bay Area. Coordinated by the United Way and KPIX TV, the website will be operational beginning Friday, Nov. 19.
