1999 New Name, New Season for UCSF Orchestra It will start its 11th season, but this time with a new name. Symphony Parnassus, formerly the UCSF Orchestra, opens for the second year under the musical direction of Stephen Paulson on Sunday, Nov. 14.
Paulson, a principal bassoonist of the San Francisco Symphony for 24 years, began conducting in 1991 and became director of the UCSF orchestra last year. The Nov. 14 concert, to start at 3 p.m., will be held in the Calvary Presbyterian Church. A second concert will take place on Monday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at Millberry Union Gymnasium on the Parnassus campus. The concert programs will include: the Tragic Overture by Johannes Brahms, Tchaikovsky’s suite from the ballet Swan Lake and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10. Tickets are priced at $10 for general admission and $5 for students with valid identification. Parking is available for Sunday’s concert at the California Pacific Medical Center’s garage, 2405 Clay St., and for Monday’s concert at the UCSF garage on Parnassus Avenue. "Our fall concerts center around the Shostakovich Symphony No. 10, one of the most powerful pieces of music ever composed," explains Paulson. "Written in the months following the death of Josef Stalin in 1953, it is filled with the anguish and hope of an artist who in turn was praised and humiliated by a political machine which was incapable of understanding his work. The second movement, a frantic and brutal portrait of the Soviet dictator is a brilliant showpiece for orchestra. Great music is by nature transcendent, and the moments of darkness in this and the other works on the program become joyous moments of communication between composer, performer and audience."
