1999 Program on Women's Reproductive Health and Human Rights The World Affairs Council of Northern California and the UCSF School of Nursing are co-sponsoring "Reproductive Health and Human Rights: International Exemplars," a program that will address the multiple forms of personal and societal oppression and violence that impact women’s reproductive health, Thursday, November 4, 5:30 to 7 p.m., 312 Sutter St., Suite 200, in San Francisco. Nancy Scheper-Hughes, PhD, professor of anthropology and director of the medical anthropology program at UC Berkeley, will talk about her research with mothers and pregnant women living in impoverished Brazilian communities. Diva Jaramillo, professor of nursing at Universidad de Antioquia in Colombia, will speak about her work with Colombian women and families. The program is part of the "Women’s Work and Empowerment Series," a five-part series that previews the International Congress on Women’s Health Issues to be held in January 2000 in San Francisco. The Congress will provide a forum for an international, interdisciplinary dialogue about key issues impacting the health status of women, such as the way women integrate different demands and stress in their lives, as well as the effect of poverty, globalization and gender-based biases in women’s work and health. Public parking is available at the Sutter-Stockton garage. For more information about the program please call 415/982-2541.
