1999 Blackburn Honored for Distinguished Research Elizabeth H. Blackburn, professor and chair of the department of microbiology and immunology, was honored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) at its annual meeting last week in Washington DC. Blackburn was presented the Baxter Award for Distinguished Research in the Biomedical Sciences. The award, on of the top honors presented by the AAMC, recognizes outstanding clinical or laboratory research conducted by a medical school faculty member. It was the latest honor for Blackburn, whose pioneering studies have revealed the critical role of telomeres -- segments of DNA that bind both ends of chromosomes – and could one day explain the secrets of cancer and aging. Also honored by the AAMC was former UCSF Chancellor Joseph P. Martin, who is now dean of Harvard Medical School. He received the Abraham Flexner Award for Distinguished Service to Medical Education. The award recognizes extraordinary individual contributions to medical schools and to the medical education community as a whole. Links:
