1999 Darney New Chief of Ob/Gyn at SFGHMC
A UCSF professor of ob/gyn and reproductive sciences, Darney recently received the UCSF Chancellor’s Award for Public Service for his commitment to providing quality reproductive services to women at the local, national, and the international level. He joined the UCSF faculty in 1981. He is the principal investigator for clinical contraception research carried out by UCSF and has conducted clinical and acceptability trials of implant, injectable and oral contraceptives, contragestins, and intrauterine devices. Darney has authored more than 100 scholarly reviews, book chapters, and scientific papers on contraception and three books on family planning. He is a reviewer for more than a dozen medical journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association, New England Journal of Medicine, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Over the past 25 years, he has been active with the American Public Health Association, the US Agency for International Development, and Planned Parenthood, among others. He earned his MD degree at UCSF and his MSc at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He served his residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston.
