Program for the Public on Women and Occupational Health

The World Affairs Council of Northern California and the UCSF School of Nursing are co-sponsoring "Occupational Health for Women in Industrial Work," a program that will address the health risks women face in low-income industrial work and how those risks affect the lives of women and their families.

The program is part of the "Women’s Work and Empowerment Series," a five-part series that previews the International Congress on Women’s Health Issues to be held in January 2000 in San Francisco. The Congress will provide a forum for an international, interdisciplinary dialogue about key issues impacting the health status of women, such as the way women integrate the different demands and stress in their lives, as well as the effect of poverty, globalization and gender-based biases in women’s work and health.

Carmen Portillo, UCSF associate professor of community health systems, will moderate the program. Speakers will include Sylvia Gundelman, associate professor of public health at UC Berkeley; and Afaf Meleis, UCSF professor of community health systems.

"Occupational Health for Women in Industrial Work" will be held on Thursday, October 14, 5:45-7 p.m., 312 Sutter Street, Suite 200, San Francisco. Cost is $7 for members of the World Affairs Council; $10 for nonmembers. Public parking is available at the Sutter Street garage. For more information about the program, call 415/982-2541.
