Hauser and Volberding Elected to Institute of Medicine

Stephen HauserStephen L. Hauser, chair and professor of neurology, and Paul A. Volberding, professor of medicine and co-director of the Center of AIDS Research at UCSF and director of the AIDS Program at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center, have been elected to the prestigious Institute of Medicine.

They were among the 55 new members of the Institute announced Monday (October 11).

Current active members in the Institute -- now totaling 588 -- elect new members from among candidates chosen for their major contributions to health and medicine or to related fields such as social and behavioral sciences, law, administration, and economics.

Paul VolberdingElection to the Institute is both an honor and an obligation to work on behalf of the organization in its governance and studies. With their election, members make a commitment to devote a significant amount of volunteer time as members of committees engaged in a broad range of studies on health policy issues. Current IOM projects include studies on improving birth outcomes in developing countries, reducing exposure to harmful substances in tobacco, the control of tuberculosis in the US, the relationship between behavior and health, and an initiative focusing on the quality of health care in America.
