The award, to be presented annually, honors a physician at SFGHMC who demonstrates a similar commitment in one or more of these areas. As the 1999 recipient, Schecter was cited in particular for his genuine compassion for patients. He was the unanimous choice of the selection committee. Schecter joined the UCSF faculty in 1980 and has served as chief of the SFGHMC surgery department since 1992. In 1993 he co-founded a Bay Area program called Operation Access that provides free outpatient surgical services to patients who cannot afford the cost of care. More than 100 surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists at area hospitals volunteer their services for the program. Links: |
