1st appeared 23 August 1999 Week of Caring, Sept. 13-18 All UCSF employees should have received registration brochures for the annual Week of Caring by now. This year's volunteer events will be held from Monday, Sept.13 through Saturday, Sept. 18 and will benefit over 27 agencies, including two UCSF affiliates. Last year, more than 400 UCSF employees and students joined forces with Bay Area communities by volunteering their time. Be a sighted guide for the blind on a zoo trip, play with toddlers and preschoolers in the classroom, care for needy newborns, garden in the sunshine, reconstruct a sandbox for UCSF kids, usher at a free Shakespeare performance, paint and fix up shelters, play sports with Special Olympics athletes, or help cook and distribute meals to the needy. "During this week, we have the opportunity to help out for only a few hours at a variety of nonprofit agencies in our community," says Chancellor J. Michael Bishop. "As with those who have participated in previous years, you are likely to come away from this experience with a new appreciation of how these agencies function, the services they provide, and how they stretch their budgets. I am certain you will find this experience to be extremely rewarding." If you have not received a brochure, call Katherine Austin in Public Affairs at 502-5984 or go online to register (http://pubaffr.ucsf.edu/caring/). Employees and students are welcome to sign up individually or as a team with co-workers. The deadline to register is Wednesday, Sept. 1. Send registration forms via campus mail to Box 0462 or drop them off at the Public Affairs office at Laurel Heights, 3333 California Street, Suite 103. The first 450 people to sign up will receive a free T-shirt. Links: UCSF Shows Its Community Spirit (1998) |
