Hunter Outlines Management of UCSF Stanford

David Hunter, interim chief executive officer of UCSF Stanford Health Care, sent an email to employees on August 18 clarifying his role and that of his firm, The Hunter Group, during the transition process.

"We are here to ensure the implementation of the financial improvement plan already developed by management and to make sure the hospitals are as financially healthy as possible," Hunter wrote. "In addition, we are available to assist the two universities as they define their future relationship. We will provide analysis and opinions when asked, but we are not taking a proactive role in that process."

At UCSF Medical Center and UCSF/Mount Zion Medical Center, the senior management team includes John Stone, who will oversee administrative operations, and Ted Schrock, chief medical officer, who will oversee clinical operations with support from Haile Debas, dean of the UCSF medical school.

Stone, a senior vice president of the Hunter Group with more than 22 years of health care financial and management experience, will serve as interim chief operating officer of the two UCSF hospitals and as UCSF Stanford's interim chief financial officer. He has been working closely with management during the past five months to develop the financial improvement plan.

The Hunter Group, Hunter said, will not make any recommendation regarding UCSF/Mount Zion, since that is the responsibility of the medical school dean and chancellor of UCSF.

Hunter also said that his group will not make strategic decisions regarding academic support or clinical services. "Our intention is to help the organization find permanent managers as soon as possible to take on the jobs we hold on an interim basis," he said.

Hunter, who said he will try to keep faculty and staff updated on changes, added, "I have no inside knowledge about what the two universities may decide regarding the future of the merger. However, I anticipate that whatever they choose, it will involve giving more accountability and responsibility to the campuses."
