1st appeared 17 August 1999 Dentistry and Nursing Receive $2 Million Osher Endowment The UCSF Schools of Dentistry and Nursing were each recently presented with a $1 million endowment grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation in an extension of the Osher Scholars Program. The program was initiated in 1988 with a similar award to the UCSF School of Medicine. The dual purpose of the Osher Scholars Program is to assist students with tuition costs in order to reduce the amount of debt that they would otherwise accrue by the time of graduation, and to place a visible emphasis on the community services aspects of a professional health career. "The Osher Scholars Program addresses a pressing need among those training in the health professions," said Charles Bertolami, dean of the UCSF School of Dentistry. "Many of our students want careers in community service and education, but the burden of debt significantly diminishes career options upon graduation."
