Meyer Friedman Institute Appoints New Director

The Meyer Friedman Institute, one of the leading centers in the world for research on the relationship between stress and heart disease, recently appointed William Grossman, UCSF professor of medicine, as its new director and recipient of the Meyer Friedman Distinguished Professorship in Medicine.

William Grossman"Dr. Grossman is one of the leading cardiologists in the country," said Barton Sparagon, medical director of the Institute. "His leadership will keep the Institute at the forefront of research into coronary-prone behavior and treatment."

The Meyer Friedman Institute supports research on the physiological consequences of stress. More than 40 years ago, Meyer Friedman, a cardiologist at Mount Zion and founder of the Institute, discovered a correlation between a certain kind of behavior and heart disease. Friedman coined the behavior "Type A," which is characterized as being impatient, harried, and easily angered. As the new director, Grossman intends to conduct research on the biologic basis for this correlation.
