Gelb New Chief of Staff at SFGHMC

Alan GelbAlan Gelb, chief of the department of emergency services at the San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center since 1990, will lead SFGHMC into the new millennium as the new chief of staff.

Installed at the recent annual meeting of the SFGHMC medical staff, Gelb now begins a two-year term.

A UCSF clinical professor of medicine, Gelb is doing research in the treatment of severe seizures. He has been a member of the UCSF faculty and an attending physician in emergency medicine at SFGHMC since 1980. He has served on numerous hospital committees regarding critical care and has worked with city agencies in developing an emergency medicine delivery system.

Gelb received his MD degree and completed his residency training in internal medicine at UCSF. He earned his BA at UC Berkeley, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and was a Regents Scholar.

He succeeds Sylvia Villarreal, who has relocated in Taos, N.M., where she will treat pediatric patients in private practice.
