New Telephone Directories Available in August
It's been three years since UCSF produced a telephone
directory and the newest edition -- to be distributed on campus beginning Monday, Aug. 2
-- offers several new features.
Among them:
Email addresses are listed for about 42 percent of
the people listed in the directory.
A map of UCSF's newest campus location, Mission Bay,
indicates the first phase of buildings to be constructed at the 43-acre research site, as
well as maps of the Parnassus campus, San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center,
Veterans Affairs Medical Center and UCSF/Mount Zion.
UCSF Stanford Health Care has its own section for the
north campus, listing contact information for administration officers, frequently called
numbers and numbers for departments and services. Not all UCSF Stanford employees are
listed however, although callers can dial 476-1000 to find out how to reach a UCSF
Stanford employee.
All directories are now spiral bound instead of the
old perfect bound editions, which don't stay open on a desk.
The complete telephone numbers are now listed -- not
just the extensions -- which alleviates the frustration people may feel if they don't know
the entire number to dial when calling from outside the University.
A prefix chart of dialing instructions shows how UCSF
and UCSF Stanford employees can save money by dialing the five-digit extension instead of
dialing 9 for an outside line plus the full telephone number.
And while the publication of the printed version
represents countless hours of work dating back to September 1998, undoubtedly the nature
of printed publications and turnover of personnel may mean some information is already
outdated. With that in mind, the new printed telephone directory, with a cover designed by
Public Affairs' principal artist Andrew Boettcher, coincides with the release of the
revamped online telephone directory.
The electronic version lists the most current information and update procedures at http://directory.ucsf.edu for all sections of the
printed directory. Search capabilities for departmental offices and general administrative
officers will be added soon.
"We want to evaluate the effectiveness of the electronic directory as a supplement or
replacement for the printed directory," says Ian Tuller, director of Information
Technology Services.
Comments about the directory may be sent to feedback@itsa.ucsf.edu
or complete the web form at http://directory.ucsf.edu/suggestions.html.
The printed telephone directories will be delivered through campus mail services to
departmental business officers, who will then distribute them to employees beginning the
week of Aug. 2. UCSF Stanford will have a separate distribution.
Kathryn Hyde, the campus recycling coordinator, notes that the old campus directories
should be recycled. For buildings with recycling, place outdated directories in the bins
for mixed paper recycling. In buildings that do not yet have the UCSF Recycling Program,
call your building manager to arrange for recycling.
