UCSF's Diversity Artist Wins "Genius"
Award
Artist Fred Wilson, who will be
creating a campus art project that celebrates UCSF's diversity, was among the winners of
the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowships announced Tuesday.
Wilson, a conceptual artist who resides in New York City, was one of 32 named to receive
the award, often referred to as "genius grants." He will receive an
unrestricted, "no strings attached" grant of $315,00 over five years.
Wilson, who was selected by the Chancellor's Subcommittee on the Diversity Art Project
both for his talent and his willingness to be open to inspiration, has spent much of the
last several months at UCSF, meeting members of the campus to get a feel for the people
and the place. He will present his proposal for an art project to the Diversity Art
Subcommittee in July. The project, to be financed by private donations, would go up by
next February at the earliest.
Wilson is an artist who "explores the relationship between museums and works of
art," stated the MacArthur Foundation. "He rearranges museum displays, reclaims
pieces from museum storage to bring out hidden or neglected possibilities, and creates new
installations that highlight important social and cultural themes."
