It's that time of year to don cap and gown and
celebrate the awesome accomplishment of graduating from UCSF. Commencement ceremonies
ended this weekend with the Dentistry and Pharmacy graduations. Ceremonies for the School
of Nursing and Psychiatry were held on June 4 and the School of Medicine and the Graduate
Division commencements
were held on May 21.
The UCSF Schools of Dentistry and Pharmacy held
commencement ceremonies at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco on Saturday,
recognizing the achievements of students, faculty and staff. The dental school awarded 82
DDS degrees and the Dental Hygiene program graduated 18.
Heather Rutherford, DDS, and Sara Kersey, dental hygiene graduate, were winners of the
Elizabeth Fuhriman Gardner Awards, which recognize scholastic achievement, service to the
community, leadership qualities, and demonstrated concern for others.
The School of Pharmacy bestowed 110 PharmD degrees to its
graduates and awarded its highest honor -- the Bowl of Hygeia -- to Mark Baje. The award,
established in 1966 and sponsored by the UC Pharmacy Alumni Association, is awarded to the
senior student who, in the estimation of classmates and instructors, best demonstrates the
qualities of an ideal pharmacist in action, thought and attitude. Honorable mention went
to Gina Delucca, Michael Lim, Kristin Patrick, and Michelle Stolpman.
Several other Pharmacy awards were given:
Shelley Albert, Bradley Bennett, and Jean Dodge received the Dean's Award for Academic
Excellence;
The Long Prize for Excellence in Teaching in the
Basic and Applied Sciences was awarded to Sexton Sutherland, a professor in the Department
of Anatomy;
The Long Prize for Excellence in Teaching in the
Clinical and Practice Courses went to Joseph Guglielmo, professor of Clinical Pharmacy;
The Long Prize for Advising and Mentoring was given
to Betty-Ann Hoener, professor of Biopharmaceutical Sciences, and Christopher Cullander,
assistant professor of Biopharmaceutical Sciences.
In ceremonies held on June 4, Rodrig Stubbs was awarded
the School of Nursing's Outstanding Master of Science Student Award. Stubbs is a teaching
assistant and president of the Black Student Nurses' Association. The award is presented
to those who best demonstrate leadership, scholarship, expertise in the area of
specialization and potential for significant contribution to nursing and scholarship.
Lisa Lestishock received the Nursing Alumni Student Award for Meritorious Service, an
honor for those who make a significant contribution in community service. Lestishock is a
member of Sigma Thata Tau, the National Nursing Honor Society. The School of Nursing also
presented awards to Joan Spicer, who received the Distinguished Dissertation Award in
Nursing; Catherine Waters, who received the Excellence in Teaching for the master of
science program; and Mary White, who received the Mentor of the Year Award for the
doctoral program.
Correction: Our original
article listed the incorrect recipients of faculty awards presented by the department of
psychiatry during its commencement ceremonies on June 4. The Residents' Association Awards
for Teaching went to Cynthia Ellis, MD (Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute), Steven
Batki, MD, and Francis Lu, MD, (SFGHMC), Stuart Beck, MD, (VA Medical Center) and John S.
Chase, MD, and Stephen Purcell, MD, (volunteer faculty).
The LPPI-UCSF Alumni-Faculty Association Interdisciplinary Achievement Award went to
