Students Announced for Fresno's Doctor's
Academy at New Sunnyside High School
The first class of students who will attend the "Doctor's Academy," the new
Health Professions Preparatory Academy at Sunnyside High School, have been selected
following a competitive application process.
A goal of the academy is to motivate students to become physicians and other health
professionals and infuse much-needed health skills into the San Joaquin Valley that mirror
Fresno County populations.
The academy will be a school within a school and was established under a partnership that
includes the UCSF School of Medicine, the UCSF-Fresno Latino Center for Medical Education
and Research, California State University at Fresno, Fresno Unified School District and
the Fresno County Office of Education.
Students will be enrolled in a four-year program of intensive math, science and English
preparation. Under a key component of the program, two academy graduates who enroll at
CSUF and achieve a minimum grade point average of 3.6 and score an average of 10 on the
Medical College Admissions Test will be given provisional consideration for early
admission to the UCSF School of Medicine, one of the top medical schools in the US. All
students who demonstrate academic excellence will be given special consideration for
scholarships at UCSF and CSUF.
In addition to gaining practical experience and assisting in medical research projects,
students will have a health practitioner or CSUF faculty mentor, as well as participate in
limited internships, medical facility visits, college tours and a lecture series.
The students will also receive weekly tutorial support from current premedical students at
CSUF and attend monthly Saturday workshops.
