Five Good Reasons to Have a Ball

The UCSF Black and White Gala will be held Saturday, May 1, and Elan Masliyah, who's helping coordinate the campus' party of the year, offers the following reasons to come out and have a ball:

"It's all there for us, including access to all exhibits -- special exhibits on bats and earthquakes -- the aquarium, penguins, crocodiles, and more," he said.

The music. In addition to SF favorite - the Cheeseballs - and DJ Wisdom, some UCSF talent will be featured. Cubanacan, a salsa band led by Marcus Lopez, a processor in campus mailing and addressing, performs in the Wild California room. Jas Syndicate, headed by Pfelton Sutton, who is also a technician at UCSF/Mount Zion, plays in Cowell Hall. The Michael Weiner Trio, featuring the VAMC neuroscientist and physician, performs in the Tidepool and Fish Roundabout area.

Stuffed mushroom w/spinach & pancetta, chicken drumettes with Hunan sauce, sun-dried tomato & feta cheese bruschetta, and baked brie en croute with sliced baguettes served in the African Room and Earth and Space Room. And in the Wild California room, there will be a full bar with margaritas, layered fiesta dip and mini tamales. Throw in cookies and brownies for dessert and you have quite a spread.

Campus community spirit. "This is a unique opportunity for staff and students to interact outside of work and study," said Masliyah. "This type of get-together happens only once a year."

It's about fun. "Come party with friends," he said. "You don't need a date. You don't have to wear black and white!"

Tickets to the gala are $25 advance/$30 at door for UCSF staff and $15/$20 for students. They may be purchased at the Millberry Union Central Desk and all Empact Presents ticket locations. For more information, call 476-2675.
