Campbell Wins Distinction in Teaching Award
Andre R. Campbell,
assistant professor of surgery in residence, was named recipient of the 1999 Distinction
in Teaching Award at last week's Founders Day banquet.
The award, bestowed by the UCSF Academic Senate, recognizes outstanding accomplishments in
teaching. Campbell excels in all aspects of teaching, "from formal lectures to
bedside teaching to informal mentoring," according to the Senate. "He has
excellent materials to supplement his lectures and he makes the students feel welcome to
seek his mentoring and counseling."
Campbell earned his medical degree at UCSF in 1985 and completed residencies at Columbia
Presbyterian in internal medicine, general surgery and surgical critical care before
returning to UCSF as a clinical instructor of surgery in 1993. In 1997, the School of
Medicine's graduating class presented him with its Clinical Teaching Award, and in the
same year, he received the Black Student Health Alliance's Teaching Award.
