UCSF Beefs Up Security After Series of Attacks

A recent rash of attacks on and near the UCSF Parnassus campus has prompted the UCSF Police Department and UCSF Stanford Health Care to beef up security services.

At 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, an assault of a female UCSF Stanford staff member occurred on the "D" level of the Millberry Union parking garage. The staff member resisted her attacker and he ran away. The employee, who suffered a hand sprain, fractured ribs, bruises, and a cut on her neck, was treated by the emergency department and discharged Saturday night but returned Sunday for further care.

The suspect is described as a white male adult, about 20 years of age, 5'10", 180-200 lbs., with dark greasy hair pulled back into a ponytail. He was wearing a black stocking cap, dark flannel shirt, dark ski vest, cut off pants (with one pant leg longer than the other), and black gloves. (See sketch).

This attack is the third in recent weeks on or near campus. On the evening of March 25, a female employee was sexually assaulted at the Kezar Stadium parking lot, located near the Parnassus campus.

UCSF police are working with the SFPD to investigate these two attacks and whether there is a connection between them, said John Fox of the UCSF Police Department.

If you have any information regarding Saturday's attack, contact the UCSF Police Department at the telephone numbers below, and reference Case No. 99-04-003.

In addition, a strong-arm robbery occurred on March 29 at 10:39 p.m. A female University affiliate was attacked in the area of Parnassus and 5th avenues by three white males who approached her from the rear and hit her with an unknown object, knocking her to the ground. One suspect grabbed her handbag from her grip, then the three male suspects fled toward a parked vehicle described only as a cream colored compact import with California license plates. The victim described all three white male suspects as being about 20 years old, 5'5" and 115 pounds. If anyone has any information, contact the UCSF Police Department and reference SFPD Case No. 990383849.

A task force is being put together immediately to review all security measures, and security patrols will be increased on and around campus, including in the MU garage.

The UCSF Police Department and UCSF Stanford Security recommend the following precautions:

  • If you think you are being followed, walk quickly to areas where people are present.

  • Report any suspicious-looking persons or activities to the Police Department as soon as possible.

  • Many strategies are involved with assault prevention. Studies show a combination of screaming, physical resistance, and fleeing has proven to be most effective.

  • Keep pressing on the car horn if you need assistance or if you see another person in need.

  • As much as possible, stay in well-lit areas during hours of darkness, and coordinate car pools and walking groups to and from your work site.

  • When using the MU garage, park on the upper levels, which are less isolated.

  • On every level of the parking structure, there are yellow poles equipped with intercoms linked directly to the Campus Police Department for emergency response.

  • If you are apprehensive, please drive to the Emergency Department parking deck and coordinate with the Security Officer for an escort from the parking structure to the Medical Center.

  • Have your keys ready when you enter or exit your car.

Bruce Schroffel, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of UCSF Stanford Health Care, suggests that everyone utilize the shuttle service located outside of the Emergency Department or use the security escorts, which are provided by calling Medical Center Security at 885-7890.

UCSF Stanford Security and the UCSF Police ask that people immediately report any suspicious activity. Safety presentations on street and night safety or assault prevention can be coordinated for departments and individuals by calling Medical Center Security at 885-7890.
