Statement on Incident at UCSF/Mount Zion on Sunday, March 7

UCSF Stanford Health CareYesterday at 8:20 a.m. in the hallway near the main lobby of UCSF/Mount Zion, a domestic situation occurred which resulted in the shooting of two people. One man, 85 years old, who was allegedly shot by his son, subsequently died in the Emergency Department.

The second person is  a long-term UCSF Stanford Environmental Services employee who was in the area of the shooting. He was shot in the leg and has been admitted to the hospital and is in fair condition.

Police immediately responded to the emergency and took the suspect into custody without incident. The suspect has been taken downtown by the SF Police Homicide detail.

We are obviously very concerned about  the safety of our staff and patients. We will be reviewing all our security procedures and staffing. We will be providing support and counseling for staff who were involved in the   incident.

Sincerely,

Bruce Schroffel
Senior Vice President/Chief Operating Officer
UCSF Stanford Health Care
