Bocelli to Perform at "Raising Hope" Gala

Andrea Bocelli, the Grammy award-winning opera singer and popular musician, will perform at the second "Raising Hope" Gala Benefit hosted by the UCSF Foundation to benefit the UCSF Cancer Center on Wednesday, January 13, 1999 at Davies Symphony Hall.

Andrea BocelliBocelli will be accompanied by Ana Maria Martinez, soprano; Steven Mercurio, conductor; and The San Diego Symphony Orchestra. The performance will be preceded by a formal black-tie dinner held in the newly refurbished San Francisco City Hall and followed by a post-performance dessert reception in the City Hall Rotunda.

"Not only is Raising Hope an extraordinary event, but it also gives the San Francisco community an opportunity to support the UCSF Cancer Center in its crucial mission to advance our understanding and treatment of cancer," said Barbara Bass Bakar, Co-Chair of the Raising Hope Gala Committee. "The funds we raise could make a difference in all our lives."

Bakar added that at UCSF the number of newly diagnosed cancer patients seen is approximately 3,200 per year. "Raising Hope" will help provide researchers and physicians with the resources necessary to accommodate the influx of patients and battle the critical war against cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 564,8000 Americans, or more than 1,500 people per day, will die of cancer this year. In California, it is estimated that 54,945 people will die of cancer in 1999 and 132,510 new cases will be diagnosed.

At UCSF, one of the world's leading health science institutions, 260 researchers and physicians -- including Nobel-prize winners -- collaborate in the discovery and evolution of new ideas and information about cancer. These UCSF scientists and physicians are the force behind the UCSF Cancer Center, where the fight to conquer this disease is being waged daily in research laboratories and through the most advanced clinical treatments, as well as in the training and education of the health care professionals of the future.

The advances made at UCSF today could lead to earlier detection of cancer, improved drug therapies and, ultimately, increased survival rates and improved quality of care.

Raising Hope ticket prices range from $500 to $2,500 and can be purchased by calling 415/502-4337.
