Reduce, Reuse and Recycle for the Holidays

The holidays offer many opportunities for resource conservation and recycling. With a little extra effort, the spirit of conservation can be integrated into everyone's holiday cheer. The following are tips from UCSF Facilities Management Recycling Coordinators Susan Bluestone and Kathryn Hyde.

Gift Ideas

  • Take a canvas bag when you go shopping.
Share homemade presents such as baked goods, jams, drawings or crafts.

  • Give books or magazines that can be shared or recycled.

  • Purchase long-lasting gifts such as: solar powered calculators and flashlights, composting bins, canvas shopping bags, ceramic mugs, insulated lunch bags or refillable pens.

  • Buy holiday cards printed on recycled paper. Better yet -- make your own from old cards.

    Gift Wrapping
Wrap gifts in comics, magazine paper, scarves, cloth napkins or fabric. Decorate grocery bags or butcher paper.
Try reusable baskets, tins, or bags.
Trim gifts with cotton yarn, twine, shoe laces or fabric cotton and decorate with acorns or pine cones.
For shipping gifts, pack with air-popped corn, newspaper or scrap paper.
Make gift tags from old cards.

    Trees
Buy a live, potted tree that can be used again next year.
Consider decorating your favorite tree or plant instead of buying a new one.
Make ornaments from reusable or recyclable materials.
String popcorn or cranberries rather than purchasing tinsel.

    And When It's All Over...
Recycle your cut tree -- call 554-7329 for a list of the City's tree recycling centers.
Treecycling day in SF will be on your first recycling day during the week of January 4th, 1999. Remove all bases, ornaments and tinsel. Do not put tree in a plastic bag.
Keep your cards and paper for next year. St. Jude's Ranch accepts all kinds of cards year-round for underprivileged children to make for resale. Mail to: St. Jude's Ranch for Children, PO Box 60100, Boulder, CO 89006.
Recycle aluminum cans, bottles, cardboard, calendars and packaging material.
Mail Boxes, Etc. accepts packaging peanuts.
