Hurricane Relief Just One Reason to Give
Hurricane Mitch and the devastation it caused in Central America has motivated many in the
UCSF community to open their hearts and give what they can to those in need.
Part of that generosity has come in the form of financial contributions to the American
Red Cross' hurricane relief effort via the UCSF and UCSF Stanford Charitable Giving
Campaign, which began this week. To make a donation, write "American Red
Cross-Hurricane Relief" under Section "C" of the Charitable Giving
contribution form and on the return envelope write "Hurricane Relief" -- the
form will be processed immediately.
Another way to give to the hurricane relief effort via the Giving Campaign is to specify
the name and address of any organization on the "Name of Tax-Exempt
Organization" line of the contribution form. One such organization is the Sisters of
Mercy-- Honduras Disaster, c/o Liz Dossa, 2300 Adeline Drive, Burlingame, CA 94010.
In fact, contributions can be made to any nonprofit
organization that's not represented on the Giving Campaign list by writing in their name
and address.
And, if you want to help but are not in the financial shape to give now, payroll deduction
might be a suitable option. As little as $2.50 can be deducted from your paycheck each
month to fund a nonprofit organization of your choice. And, although $2.50 won't buy much
in the US, it would pay for a few meals of rice, beans, tortillas and a beverage in
Central America.
Many people are also in need right in our Bay Area neighborhoods and cities. Contributions
can be made to them through the six federations participating in the Giving campaign:
ArtsChoice, Bay Area Black United Fund, Combined Health Appeal of California, Earth Share
of California, United Way of the Bay Area, and United Way of Santa Clara County.
These federations serve as umbrella agencies that assist nonprofit organizations in
raising funds to support their programs. Under 7.9 cents of each contributed dollar covers
processing and distribution costs, says Katherine Riordan, campaign coordinator at UCSF.
If you return your contribution form by November 30, you will automatically be entered to
win round-trip tickets -- courtesy of Campus Travel -- for two to any American Airlines
destination in the Continental US, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Bermuda or the Bahamas.
Travel must be completed by the end of April, 1999.
If you have questions about the Charitable Giving Campaign, contact your donor
representative or call Katherine Riordan at 476-0729.
