Hurricane Mitch Relief Effort Underway at UCSF
A relief effort for the victims of Hurricane Mitch in Central America has begun at UCSF. A
collection point for emergency relief materials has been set up in the Respiratory Care
Service Office, Room M 69 in the basement of Moffitt hospital. A drop-off point has
also been established at UCSF/Mt. Zion, Room 704.
Non-perishable food, including baby formula and dry milk, and over-the-counter
medications, such as Pedialite, anti-diarrheal medications, Tylenol and aspirin, are
desperately needed. Collected materials will be airlifted, courtesy of La Taca Airlines,
to the Honduras consulate in Nicaragua and distributed from there.
Oscar Garcia, a native of Nicaragua who is a registered respiratory therapist at the UCSF
Medical Center, is coordinating the relief effort on campus. Garcia will also be placing
boxes for donations in various hospital locations. He can be reached via pager at
719-1729.
