Choosing a Research Program Now Easier

Although over half of UCSF's medical students do research while they study here, choosing a research project has often presented a significant challenge.

But, thanks to the new online Faculty Research Database, it should be easier for students to pinpoint who -- of the over 2000 School of Medicine faculty -- is doing research in their area of interest. The online database, found at http://128.218.87.125/faculty/, was developed by the Office of Curricular Affairs, with the support of Haile Debas, dean of the School of Medicine.

"Medical students who are interested in doing research have a broad range of options available to them, but finding out about those options has been difficult," said Diane Colby, Assistant Dean for Student Research. "Until now, information about the research interests of our faculty was available only through a large number of separate publications, such as the bulletins of our many graduate programs and the annual reports of departments." The new website creates, for the first time, one central location at which students and others can search for information about the research interests of all of the UCSF School of Medicine faculty.

The database, which is accessible to the general public, is expected to be most popular among students. "The database will probably be used by three groups: UCSF medical students, postdoctoral fellows, and other students considering training at UCSF," said Colby.

The database can be searched by faculty name, topic, key word, or department. It contains the names of all full-time, salaried faculty in the School of Medicine, and it currently has completed profiles for approximately 400 of these faculty. Profiles of faculty members include a description of their research interests, contact information, and up to five representative publications. Each profile will also provide a link to a public access version of MedLine that calls up references to and abstracts of publications by that faculty member. (The MedLine database is provided through PubMed -- a National Library of Medicine search tool -- and is therefore accessible from non-campus Internet connections.)

All names of School of Medicine faculty have been entered into the database but only 400 have submitted descriptions of their research at this time. However, because the database is online, faculty can easily add or update their profiles. Faculty members interested in updating their profiles should begin by reviewing the information currently online and then contact the database staff through the site's home page to learn how to log onto the profile-add/update page.
