Buck Breast Care Center Dedicated

On October 15, Carol Franc Buck visited the Clinical Cancer building at UCSF/Mount Zion to attend the dedication of a center that bears her name. The Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center ties together all aspects of breast cancer care from diagnosis to treatment and psychosocial support.

Buck, herself a breast cancer survivor, has generously supported UCSF since 1992 with gifts that range from postdoctoral fellowships in oncology to academic positions to clinical research projects.

Carol Franc BuckThe Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center has experienced the greatest growth of all the oncology programs over the past three years. To meet patient demands, the center will occupy a full floor in the new outpatient building being built at the corner of Sutter and Divisadero streets. The new center will have a "home-like," rather than typical doctor's office atmosphere.

Buck's generosity made it possible for the center to renovate its current waiting room so that it is more patient-friendly and relaxing. Other new additions include a health garden and adjacent cafe providing healthful snacks, meals and cooking demonstrations.

"The focus is on patients and patients' values," said Laura Esserman, director of the Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center, at the dedication ceremony. "We don't want to practice the state of the art. We want to advance the state of the art."
