1st appeared 7 October 1998 Depression Screening Day is Oct. 8 UCSF mental health professionals will hold two depression screenings on Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute Auditorium. The free screenings will begin at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. More than 17 million Americans suffer from depressive illness annually, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. The majority of depressed people do not receive treatment because their symptoms either are not recognized, are blamed on personal weakness or are misdiagnosed. The good news is that more than 80 percent of those suffering from depression can be treated successfully, says Laura Deering, registered nurse with the department of psychiatry. Now in its seventh year, National Depression Screening Day is designed to educate people about depression, destigmatize the illness and bring those suffering from depression into the health care system for evaluation and treatment. For more information, call Deering at 476-7586. |
