Evangelista First appeared 28 September 1998 It's nice to be back, even though the computer screen looks blank and the "Week at a Glance" planner shows a string of deadlines ahead. When the Eye last wrote, it was still summer and chilly on Parnassus. Now, the fall quarter has started, there are a few hundred new young faces on campus, staff are counting the vacation hours they need to accrue for next year, "ER" has a new third-year medical student on its TV series, and it's still chilly on Parnassus. Thanks to those who've offered tips on how to deal with cluster headaches (other than the advice of slapping the other side of your head with a hammer to balance the pain). We'll take any free words of wisdom. Yes, this is self-serving, but who the heck likes looking at the same column for three weeks. UCSF Bunch Tough on the City's Streets
Although second place might be something to brag about, the UCSF runners take it in stride. In the 1990s, UCSF has won in the corporate challenge co-ed division three times, including a first place last year, according to team captain Jimmy Choy, who works for Environmental Health and Safety, and it won several times in the 1980s when the event was run on Market Street. (We think they finished ahead of Muni, too.) First place teams go on to the finals in New York City, where the corporate creams of the crop -- the survivors of the 6,000 companies that competed around the US -- go at it foot to foot. In 1990, the last time the UCSF team made the New York trip (when the prize included all expenses paid) it finished a respectable fourth. Choy, trying not to sound corporate sour grapes, says even if UCSF would have taken first this year, it would not have made the New York trek in October. Budget restrictions and busy schedules at this fine academic institution would have prevented any UCSF winner from hitting the streets of Manhattan. Other members of the UCSF Racing Team competing in the Corporate Challenge were Craig Pattengill, Jack Youngren, Ronald Brown and Elizabeth Simpson. Snoozeville A reader too shy to be named alerts the Eye that one of the best places to relax, or even sneak a catnap, is on the first floor of the Library (north end), near the windows that offer the spectacular view of SF, and on a clear day, across the Golden Gate Bridge. Some regulars -- students and staff -- read, daydream and even kick off their shoes and throw up their feet on the comfy couches. Occasionally a snorer will have to be nudged. After all, how are the rest of us supposed to fall asleep? Alphabet Soup A campaign is under way to use the full institutional name of San Francisco General Hospital, which is San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center. Its initials now become SFGHMC. And make that change ASAP. Reggae Follow-up If you haven't yet had a chance to hear physician and reggae artist Cosmo Fraser, he'll be performing and autographing his new CD on Saturday, Oct. 3, 4:30 p.m. at Border's Books in Emeryville. Where's Barney When You Need Him During his absence from the office, The Eye was feeling well enough at times to take a peek at what TV has to offer to those who don't work eight-to-five. On the day (Sept. 11) the Starr report was released, the networks had reporters standing by computers and fax machines ready to recite details. We went channel surfing for a reprieve and escape from sex talk, but between 9 and noon found the following: Sally's "Prostitutes and Their Families;" Montel's update of past guests who've taken paternity tests; the show "Forgive and Forget" -- a man is sorry he slept with his brother's fiancee; and Springer's "Shocking Transsexual Secrets." Too much -- how about tuning in good old KQED? But we drop in on the middle of a documentary featuring a workshop and discussion about dealing with sexual harassment -- in elementary schools. Click, not today dear, I have a headache. Readers: If you have any items or suggestions for this column, send us an email: andye@itsa.ucsf.edu. |
