1st appeared 23 September 1998 March for Cancer Tomorrow This coming weekend, thousands of people are expected to gather in Washington DC for The March, a demonstration aimed at creating "a powerful, completely unprecedented crusade dedicated to curing cancer now." Communities throughout the country are holding their own rallies in conjunction with The March, including San Francisco, whose march is being sponsored in part by the UCSF Clinical Cancer Center. The San Francisco march will take place tomorrow (Thursday) at Union Square from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. The lunchtime rally will include a silent march around Union Square, some speakers, and the distribution of a cancer bill of rights. The San Francisco Bay Area Cancer Bill of Rights will be signed by patients and organizations at the march and then taken to Washington to be presented to legislators, said Keren Stronach, MPH, coordinator of the Cancer Resource Center. Stronach said the goals of the bill of rights are to: 1. Increase research budgets with an emphasis on environmental, chemical and dietary links to cancer; 2. Increase money spent on cancer education including prevention strategies; 3. Make cancer the nations number-one research and healthcare priority; 4. Ensure access to clinical trials and quality care for everyone. Participants of the San Francisco march are encouraged to bring memorabilia, such as photos, narratives, poems, photos of themselves or of relatives, to be displayed on the Wall of Hope. The purpose of the wall, Stronach said, is "to point out how cancer touches so many people and to make it real." The temporary wall will be erected in Union Square and may eventually be exhibited elsewhere, Stronach said. Other sponsors of the San Francisco march include the American Cancer Society, The Breast Cancer Fund, International Myeloma Foundation, Leukemia Society of America, National Brain Tumor Foundation, Pharmacia and Upjohn, and The Wellness Community.
