1st appeared 21 August 1998 Let the Laurel Heights Move-Ins Begin It's been two years in the making but Laurel Heights is now ready for some of its new tenants. In fact, several groups have already moved into the newly renovated, 362,500-gross-square-foot building and many more will do so in the coming months. "There will be two moves a week for the next six weeks," said Rob Purcell, project manager. And so, six weeks from now, 320 people will occupy the 100,000-square-foot fourth floor of Laurel Heights. Come October, departments will begin moving into the third floor offices, and in January, second floor move-ins begin. The whole building when fully occupied will have 1200 residents -- including the 250 existing occupants -- in addition to a daycare center and a cafeteria.
Later this month the Center for Health and Community, formerly known as the Center for Social, Behavioral, and Policy Sciences, will move from their current digs in the Laguna Honda School building to Laurel Heights. The windows in the building are very large (five feet wide by ten feet high), providing lots of solar heat, Purcell said, and beautiful views of the Golden Gate Bridge and downtown San Francisco. According to Purcell, the offices were designed to leave 70% of the windows unobstructed so that the majority of tenants would be able to enjoy the sunlight (when it's not foggy, that is).
