1st appeared 28 July 1998 Medical Center Holds Cultural Diversity Workshops The UCSF Medical Center has begun holding day-long workshops on cultural diversity to foster a welcoming environment for clients and co-workers alike. The workshops, which all UCSF Medical Center employees are expected to attend, reflect the commitment made by UCSF to bring the issue of cultural diversity to the foreground, said Mary McCollow, co-director of the Recognize, Empower, Success, Patients, Excellence, Cultural diversity, Teamwork (RESPECT) team at the medical center. McCollow described RESPECT as "a new 'service excellence'-type program that looks at customer service, employee recognition and cultural diversity." Although the workshops are only being held at UCSF Stanford's "North campus" (UCSF) for now, McCollow said they may be rolled out in the future at the "South campus," also known as Stanford Medical Center. Designed to sensitize employees to cultural diversity as a critical issue in both patient care and office settings, the idea for the workshops was originated by the Chancellor's Committee on Diversity, which presented a comprehensive report to the Medical Center in January 1997 and piloted the workshops on diversity. Three cultural diversity workshops have been held so far and have been well received, McCollow said. Class dates are being held through September on the following dates: Tuesday, Aug. 4; Wednesday, Aug. 12; Tuesday, Aug. 18; Wednesday, Aug. 26; Wednesday, Sept. 2; Tuesday, Sept. 8; Tuesday, Sept. 15; and Wednesday, September 30. Medical Center employees can sign up by contacting Ayana Shorter at 476-4824 (email shortera@medcenter.ucsf.edu). If you have questions, please contact Gemma Rieser at 476-1406 or Mary McCollow at 476-1618. Links: |
