1st appeared 16 July 1998 Amy Levine -- A Woman Who Makes a Difference
"I feel honored and thrilled to be recognized by the Commission along with five other women in the Bay Area," said Levine, who, in 1984 became the founding director of the UCSF Women's Resource Center (WRC). The Center offers numerous programs and services to women such as educational lectures, workshops, support groups and sexual harassment advising. In addition, the Rape Prevention Education program that offers self-defense classes is housed within the WRC. "Our mission is to effect social change through these programs and services that are designed to promote gender equity," Levine said. "The resource center is presently expanding its vision and role in the community and we are changing our name to the Center on Gender Equity, effective September 1, 1998. Part of the name change reflects a new component of the Center for Gender Equity, which will encompass lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender resources." This year, the WRC, under the auspices of the UCSF Chancellor's Advisory Committee on the Status of Women, UC Berkeley and UCSF Stanford Health Care hosted the first "Women Leaders: A Symposium for Women in University Settings" where over 200 women from UCSF and UCB gathered together to critically examine and discuss where women are today in the academic arena. The WRC is currently planning another women and leadership symposium scheduled for the year 2000 that will invite those interested in women's issues from all the UC campuses throughout California. In addition, the Women's Resource Center, in collaboration with the UCSF Chancellor's Advisory Committee on the Status of Women, has been able to initiate policy change over the years that supports gender equity at UCSF. For instance, Levine recently served on a committee that developed a sexual assault policy for UCSF which is currently under campus review. Levine was also instrumental in planning the State Assembly's Select Committee on California's Women public hearing that occurred on June 3. The hearing was designed to make recommendations to both the state Senate and Assembly to improve the status of women's health in California. The event was sponsored by Assembly Speaker pro Tempore Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica), who serves as chair of the Select Committee on California's Women. The COSW is hosting a ceremony on August 13 at the San Francisco City Club, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. that will honor the women who were awarded a 1998 Women Who Make a Difference award. The event is open to the public and will kick-off the annual California Commission on Women's convention. Links: Daybreak story on LGBT Resources Source: Abby Sinnott, News Services |
