1st appeared 1 July 1998 Dean Makes Clarification to Admissions Numbers The June 17 issue of Daybreak included a story titled "Education the Priority for School of Medicine," in which Haile Debas, dean of the School of Medicine, was quoted from his State of the School Address as saying that the number of underrepresented minorities expected to enroll in 1998 "are actually better than two years ago." Subsequent to his address, Dean Debas learned that the numbers on which this statement was based were incorrect. In this year's applicant pool, the number of underrepresented minorities, the number of them offered admission to the medical school and the number of students who accepted the offer of admission continue the downward trend of the past few years. The School of Medicine received 456 applications from underrepresented minorities this year as contrasted to 511 last year. The school made 42 offers this year and 51 last year and is currently holding places for 22 underrepresented minority students for the 1998 entering class. Last year 26 underrepresented minority students enrolled in the school of medicine; final enrollment figures for 1998 will not be known until the first day of school, in September. |
