Elder and Child Care Referral Services Divide

The UCSF Elder Care Referral Service joined the Institute for Health & Aging on May 1, dividing from the Child Care Referral Service, which will remain under Millberry Programs & Services. The Elder Care program's director, Jane Mahakian, who holds a doctorate in clinical psychology with an emphasis on geriatrics, has been providing educational and referral services to the UCSF community since 1992.

"The division just made sense," Mahakian said. "The Elder Care Referral Service is a natural fit with the Institute for Health & Aging. Now both programs have the support and resources to better serve UCSF employees."

Based at the Institute's Laurel Heights offices, Mahakian's new phone number is 502-8673. Pauline Lee continues to head the Child Care Referral Service and is reachable at 476-2692.

Mahakian leads classes in elder care that give participants practical advice on how to manage the lives of their older loved ones. Sign-ups have started for the next six-week class to begin Wednesday, July 8. Classes will be held from 11 a.m. to noon.

And while Mahakian doesn't have all the answers, she can point to other resources that might. "The Bay Area has plenty of resources in the area of elder care and people should consult with me before making a decision," says Mahakian.

The Elder Care Referral Service is also offering two six-week elder care support groups for caregivers. Psychologist Lois Goodwill, formerly of the Faculty Staff Assistance Program, is now volunteering at the Institute and Donna Christner-Lile, a life transition specialist, will each lead one confidential support group for UCSF employees who may benefit from the comfort and camaraderie of others caring for their elders. Both groups will begin meeting on Wednesday, July 8. Goodwill's group will meet from 11 a.m. to noon and Christner-Lile's will meet from noon to 1 p.m.

To register for classes or either group call Mahakian at 502-8673 or send her an email: janem@itsa.ucsf.edu.
