CAPS Honored by Haight Ashbury Free Clinics

The UCSF Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) received the Health Care Honoree award from the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics on Friday, June 5, during an awards ceremony held in honor of the Clinics' 31st anniversary.

The Health Care Honoree award honors "an outstanding individual, organization or corporation with a proven record of community activity who, through support, has demonstrated outstanding health care delivery, has significantly improved the quality of life in the community, and whose dedication to accessible health care has led to greater access for the community."

The Center for AIDS Prevention Studies is committed to maintaining a focus on prevention of HIV disease, using the expertise of multiple disciplines, and an applied and community-based perspective within a university setting.

The Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, Inc., founded in 1967, is a community-based affiliation of individual free clinics, providing health care, education, training and research. The clinics provide health care for the working poor as well as the unemployed, and for the middle class who cannot afford private medical care.

The award comes as UCSF prepares for the 12th World AIDS Conference in Geneva, Switzerland from June 28 to July 3. Thomas J. Coates, director of CAPS and the AIDS Research Institute at UCSF, will hold a briefing for local media about the research that the 150-plus UCSF scientists will present at the conference. The briefing will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 1 to 5 p.m. at CAPS, 74 New Montgomery Street.
