1st appeared 4 June1998 School of Nursing Sponsors HIV & Addiction Retreat The UCSF School of Nursing will present a one-day retreat on Monday, June 8, titled "HIV and Addiction: the Science of Caring." Keynote speaker Michael E. Gorman, principal investigator of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute at the University of Washington, will present a talk titled "State of the Science of Substance Use and HIV Infection." The retreat, which will be held at the Claremont Resort in Oakland, is sponsored by the UCSF School of Nursing's International Center for HIV/AIDS Research, the Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center and the Universitywide AIDS Research Program and with a grant from the Upjohn Company. Talks to be given by the UCSF community include: "HIV Prevention and Treatment Issues of Clients with Substance Use and Mental Health Problems," by Catherine Lyons, assistant clinical professor, community health systems and nurse practitioner at SFGH; "Substance Use and HIV Infection in Adolescents," by Martha Moon, postdoctoral fellow in the department of medicine and AIDS Prevention Studies. Other talks include "Women's Health and Perinatal HIV Infection: Provider and Patient Perspectives" and "Chinese Medicine and HIV Infected Substance Users." The International Center for HIV/AIDS Research and Clinical Training in Nursing is committed to the prevention of HIV transmission and the care of persons living with HIV infection. Through the work of the faculty, students, and community members, the Center seeks to promote optimal health for persons at risk for and living with HIV/AIDS across all care delivery settings.
