UCSF Health Experts 'Chatting' on the Internet

People with chronic and serious illnesses such as breast cancer and asthma can now receive free health information on their conditions through online computer chats with UCSF health care professionals.

The UCSF School of Nursing recently formed a partnership with Sapient Health Network (SHN), a free Internet-based health information and support service developed for people with chronic and serious illnesses. This is the first such partnership for both SHN and UCSF.

"This relationship allows us to provide the clinical expertise to SHN as well as provide health information in a free-flowing dialogue to people with serious conditions," said Joanne Saxe, associate clinical professor, department of community health systems in the School of Nursing.

The main role of this UCSF web-nursing project has been to host hour-long "live" online chats -- question-and-answer sessions through the computer -- on specific diseases and conditions. With access to a computer and the Internet, members can have an ongoing dialogue with UCSF health experts and chat with other members interested in the health topic. In addition to chats, UCSF experts also provide answers to members' questions through online message boards targeting specific health conditions.

"Through the Internet we've been able to educate and empower members with knowledge on their conditions," Saxe said. "Members are given the tools and support to make informed decisions about how to cope with their disease or condition."

Upcoming chats with UCSF health care professionals include the following:

Topic: Depression, May 26, 4 to 5 p.m.
Expert: Donna Guyot, RN, ANP, MS, assistant clinical professor and coordinator of post-master's adult nurse practitioner program, department of community health systems, UCSF School of Nursing

Topic: Heart Disease, May 28, 5 to 6 p.m.
Expert: Catherine Kelber, RN, ANP, MS, associate clinical professor and director of adult nurse practitioner program, department of community health systems, UCSF School of Nursing
