UCSF Celebrates Asian Heritage

UCSF has been celebrating Asian Pacific American heritage all week with festivals, movies and lectures. Yesterday, dancers and musicians held court in the Millberry Union gymnasium, performing traditional Hawaiian entertainment for an audience of employees, students and children from the Marilyn Reed Lucia Child Care Study Center.

At the festival, student groups prepared Asian foods, including Vietnamese and Chinese delicacies. Vendors sold T-shirts, jewelry and paintings and the Asian American Donor Program enlisted donors for its bone marrow drive.

The celebration week was sponsored in part by the Asian Pacific American Systemwide Alliance (APASA). APASA was founded in 1981 by staff and students who wanted to form an Asian Pacific American network for the UC system. At UCSF, where nearly one-third of students and more than one-fourth of staff are Asian, members have been active with APASA since 1988. Among the group's goals are promoting affirmative action and the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Asian Pacific people, and strengthening professional and social relationships within the community.

Other sponsors of Asian Pacific American Celebration Week were EMPACT!, Arts & Performances, UFEA PUSO, Reprographics, the Women's Resource Center, the Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity/Diversity Office, Public Service Programs and the Chancellor's Enrichment Fund.
