UCSF Summer Camp Takes Hiatus -- Daybreak Wants Your Camp Recommendations

Some UCSF employees received a letter recently telling them that Millberry Outdoor Programs would not be offering summer camp programs this year because of the loss of key personnel. They were told, however, that a shuttle service from UCSF to the Stonestown camp kidsYMCA summer day camp program had been arranged.

The summer camp program at UCSF was instituted about six years ago and usually served 150 children of UCSF employees and another one hundred kids from the general public. The programs will return in the summer of 1999, said Steve Leonoudakis, director of Millberry Outdoor Programs.

Camp is not being offered this summer because the staff responsible for planning and organizing the programs all left UCSF simultaneously last year, he said. "We really didn't have the capacity to replace the people in the space of time that we had," Leonoudakis said. "We had to make a really tough decision."

Because of the demand for convenient summer programs, a shuttle will link Stonestown YMCA with the campus (in front of Millberry Union). The price of the program will remain the same as the UCSF program.

In addition to the Stonestown YMCA camp, UCSF has information on other programs. Local and Northern California camps will be coming to campus for a child summer camp fair on Tuesday, April 21 from noon to 2 p.m. in the MedSci Lobby. Child and Elder Care Referral Service will be holding the fair to assist parents in making plans for their children this summer. Jane Mahakian, program coordinator, said they will be handing out a resource book for parents at the fair.

To request a copy of the resource book or for childcare referrals call Mahakian at 476-2692. For information on the Stonestown YMCA program call 759-9632, ext. 214.

If you have any recommendations for summer camp programs that you'd like to share, please send an email to the Daybreak Editor at dybreak@itsa.ucsf.edu for possible publication in a future article.
