UCSF Nursing and Medical Schools Ranked in U.S. News & World ReportUS News logo

In the annual survey of graduate schools published by U.S. News & World Report, UCSF's School of Nursing and School of Medicine received high marks. The "America's Best Graduate Schools" issue will be on newsstands on Monday.

The School of Nursing ranked second among the nation's nursing schools, with top honors going to the University of Washington. The School received four number one rankings in the seven nursing specialties rated by deans, faculty and administrators nationwide. The nursing school's clinical specialist, pediatrics, nurse practitioner/adult and nurse practitioner/family ranked first. Its geriatrics program ranked second and midwifery, fourth.

The School of Medicine tied for seventh -- down from its fourth place ranking in last year's survey -- but it was the only school to rank in the top ten in both the overall and primary care (4th place) categories. The overall top rank for medical schools went to Harvard University.

Medical schools were also ranked in eight specialties, and UCSF finished in the top 10 in seven of the categories. It ranked first in AIDS care, second in women's health, third in both internal medicine and drugs/alcohol, fourth in pediatrics, fifth in family medicine and 10th in geriatrics.

UCSF's Graduate Program in Physical Therapy, operated in cooperation with San Francisco State University, ranked 16th in the U.S. News & World Report survey. The magazine this year did not rank dentistry or pharmacy programs.
