| School Of Nursing To Host Black Nurses'
Symposium "Our
Future: The Promise of Youth" is the theme of the
12th annual Black Nurses' Symposium taking place at UCSF
on Friday, February 20. Sponsored by the School of
Nursing, this year's symposium will be held in Cole
Auditorium, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day-long event will
feature speakers and panel discussions aimed at
reclaiming African-American youth and instilling them
with courage to face their future.
All nurses are encouraged
to attend the symposium to hear nursing leaders from
around the country focus their attention on the subject
of youth. Among the speakers will be Agnes Rolle-Morton,
RN, MS, MPH, PHN, of the San Francisco Department of
Public Health, who will discuss ways of "Mobilizing
the Village to Reclaim Our Youth," in the
symposium's keynote address.
Nanny Murrell, RN, PhD,
associate professor in the Community Health Department in
the School of Nursing at the University of Texas, will
speak on "Courage: What Our Youth Must Have."
In addition, an afternoon session will also provide
information on primary health care issues for youth as
well as a social and cultural perspective.
Now in its 12th year, the
Black Nurses Symposium aims to raise serious issues for
African-American nursing leaders as well as to encourage
more African-Americans to pursue careers in nursing.
Thus, an afternoon nursing education workshop is designed
to give nurses interested in pursuing higher education
strategies for negotiating the educational system.
A reception will follow
the symposium at 4 p.m. Registration for the event is
$75. For more information and registration, call Joann
Ray at 415/476-4897.
