Black Heritage Month Film Festival

Along with other activities planned for Black Heritage Month, the Pan African Scholars group at UCSF is sponsoring a film festival throughout February. All films will be shown in Health Sciences West, Room 300 and will start at 6:15 p.m.

Feb. 4: Les Ballets Africains (National Dance Company of the Republic of Guinea) presentation of "HERITAGE;” 2 hrs. Expression of West African culture through music and dance.

Feb. 11: "Listen Up. The Lives of Quincy Jones"; 1 hr., 54 min. Documentary about one of the most important, effective and productive African American artists of the 20th century.

Feb. 17: "The Court Martial Of Jackie Robinson"; 1 hr., 34 min. Prior to becoming a baseball player, Jackie Robinson had to confront America's racism as an officer in the US Army. Tale of a true "warrior".

Feb. 18: "Quilombo"; 2 hr., English subtitles. A true story about the formation and survival of one of the most successful slave Marron societies in Brazil--Palamares. Enslaved Africans fought for their freedom in all slave countries of the Americas.

Feb. 19: "Mister Johnson"; 1 hr., 45 min. A poignant, sometimes funny look at the sinister relationship between the colonist (Nigerian) and colonizer (British). Film demonstrates the importance of maintaining allegiance to one's cultural values.

Feb. 20: "SANKOFA"; 2 hr., 5 min. A powerful story about the importance of previous physically and presently mentally enslaved peoples of the African diaspora to discover and embrace their rich historical/cultural grounding prior to slavery in the Americas.

Feb. 25: "Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together"; 1 hr,16 min. A soulful presentation about bringing together three accomplished pianists ("Professor Longhair," "Tuts" Washington and Allan Toussaint) for a recording session as a piano trio. This widely acclaimed film is back by public demand.

A second film (to be announced) of 60-70 minutes will also be shown on this date.
