Group Helps Campus as it Plans Future UCSF Chancellor Haile T. Debas recently appointed 34 representatives to UCSFs Community Advisory Group and asked the newly assembled group to help the campus put into effect an ambitious long range plan to reinvest in existing campus sites and to build a major new site in the Mission Bay development. The Community Advisory Group (CAG) is composed of members drawn from neighborhood, ethnic, business, labor and other groups interested in planning issues. (See list) UCSF formed the group in 1992 as part of a commitment to involve a broad representation of citizens in the Universitys planning process. The original CAG members helped the campus set goals and objectives eventually incorporated into UCSFs Long Range Development Plan, approved last year by the UC Board of Regents. The LRDP led to the selection of the new Mission Bay site and a commitment to reinvest in existing sites. About of third of the members of the current CAG were members of the original group. The new CAG members, who first met in November for an organizational meeting, include several who represent neighborhood groups and businesses near the planned expansion site at Mission Bay. Debas credited the group for helping UCSF shape a long range plan that serves the community and the campus, and he charged the group with helping the campus implement the plan over the next 15 years. UCSF hopes to begin construction within a year on the first laboratory building at Mission Bay and to move rapidly on construction of additional buildings at the site. UCSF expects to develop a total of 2.65 million square feet of new space at the site for research and teaching. The public is invited to attend CAG meetings. The next CAG meeting is scheduled for 6:30 pm on March 30 at the UCSF Laurel Heights building, 3333 California Street.
