Remembering and Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr.

The campus will celebrate its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Week, beginning Tuesday, January 20, with a series of presentations and guest speakers. This year’s theme is “Remember! Celebrate! Act!”

The following is the schedule of events at UCSF.

Tuesday, Jan. 20

  • Presentation of annual UCSF Martin Luther King Jr. Awards, honoring student, faculty and staff who have promoted diversity and led others to carry out ideals inspired by Dr. King, 3:30-4:30 p.m., Cole Hall. (See previous Daybreak story on the award winners.)
  • "One's Man's Vision and Our Struggle For Humanity," a one-hour video, will be shown continuously, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, in the Medical Sciences Lobby, beginning Tuesday.

Wednesday, Jan. 21Amos Brown

  • San Francisco Supervisor Amos Brown presents a lecture, “Of King and Country,” 12:10 to 1 p.m., HSW 300. Brown will discuss whether the dream envisioned by Dr. King is alive today.

Thursday Jan. 22

  • Wilma Mankiller“A Conversation with Wilma Mankiller,” noon to 1 p.m., Cole Hall. Humorous, witty and a captivating storyteller, Mankiller, the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, is an astute observer of the American political scene. An important advocate for minority rights and women's issues, she will explore the connections between race and gender that inspire people to work together for social justice.
  • Cole Hall Cinema presents “Soul Food,” 5:45 and 8:15 p.m. "Mama Joe,” the matriarch of an embattled Chicago family, dishes out generous helpings of soul food, love and wisdom during Sunday dinners. (Showing again on Friday, 6:30 and 9 p.m.)

Friday, Jan. 23

  • Poets On Parnassus. An open reading with guest poets in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., 4:30 pm, in Toland Hall, 533 Parnassus. Poets should arrive at 4:15 p.m.
