Clinic Information - the Center for Mothers and Newborns As one of the first hospitals in the western United States to give women the option of delivering in an alternative birth center, UCSF has a long established commitment to safe, comfortable, family-centered births. UCSF prenatal providers are obstetrics faculty members including physicians and certified nurse midwives. Other providers include family practice faculty physicians and nurse practitioners. For women with high risk pregnancies, UCSF obstetricians and perinatologists provide the most advanced management techniques and consultations. Our Center for Newborns and Mothers offers women and their families the ability to experience labor, delivery, and recovery in the same comfortable room, many offering spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay. Our post-partum rooms are private and comfortable. We are proud to report a cesarean section rate of 22.8% and a successful VBAC rate (vaginal birth after C-section) of 72%. While the San Francisco birthrate continues to drop, the UCSF Center for Newborns and Mothers has seen an increase in the number of births over the last three years.
UCSF In-Patient Lactation Services 500 Parnassus Ave. The UCSF Lactation Service is a unique program that offers prenatal education, training, support and individual consultations for new mothers. Lacatation consultants provide assessment and support for mothers and babies having difficulty with the feeding process, milk production, and milk transfer. They can assist with positioning, latch-on, and assessments of infant and breast response, and may also help in the progression toward breastfeeding for infants not able to breastfeed due to illness or prematurity. Specially trained nurses also provide support to women who are re-lactating or plan to nurse an adopted infant; and for women who are at risk for lactation compromise, from either previous unsatisfactory breastfeeding experience or medical or surgical conditions that may make it difficult to breastfeed. Approximately 50% of the women who give birth at the UCSF Birth Center become clients of the UCSF Lactation Service. To book a tour of the Birth Center, please call 415-353-2667.
