We have several primary partnering institutions to facilitate attainment of the scientific, outreach, service and training objectives.

The collaboration between the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) and UCSF dates to over a century ago from the establishment of the two institutions and early San Francisco response to bubonic plague, botulism, and other infectious diseases.

Project 1 (the fluoride varnish clinical trial to prevent early childhood caries) is occurring in two of the SFDPH facilities.

The late Patricia Evans, MD, MPH, Medical Director, Maternal and Child Health, SFDPH served as a Co-Director of our Center.

Project 2, MAYA (Mothers and Youngsters Access to Care), is occurring at the San Ysidro Community Health Center (SYHC), near the US-Mexican border. SYHC is a model community health center, providing comprehensive primary care services including dental services to a low-income, high risk population.

Edward Martinez, MPA, MPH, Chief Executive Officer, SYHC serves as a Co-Director of our Center.

The University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry is the organizational home for the Center. Many of the investigators have faculty appointments at the School of Dentistry. The Center is one of many units that are part of the University's larger, multidisciplinary, population-health oriented Center for Health and Community that share common interests in understanding and reducing health disparities. Nancy Adler, PhD, Director of this Center, is an ex-officio member of our Executive Council.

The National Institutes of Health supports this Center through a Cooperative Agreement. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) plays an active role in monitoring and evaluating Center activities. Ruth Nowjack-Raymer, PhD, NIDCR Program Official is a member of our Executive Council. In addition to NIDCR, support from the Center comes form the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities.

We have additional California partners who are conducting two large, affiliated projects, with the shared goal of preventing and reducing early childhood caries. These projects provide outreach, clinical and community service components for the Center. We are collaborating with the California Department of Health Services and Alameda County Health Care Services in the implementation and evaluation of the Healthy Kids, Healthy Teeth demonstration program funded by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare and the Alameda County Department of Health Care Services. Robert Isman, DDS, MPH, is directing this program. Data from this project may be incorporated into the Risk Assessment for ECC (RAE project 4) Center project. The second demonstration project, "Children's Oral Health: Access, Prevention & Education" is being conducted in Monterey County by the Appolonia Foundation for Children's Dental Health with funding from Proposition 10. Ray Stewart, DDS, is Project Director.
