Students in the BMS Program participate in a wide range of activities that foster interaction and promote scientific development. The BMS Program sponsors a set of core activities that focus on recent developments in biological research that have implications for understanding human health and disease. These core activities include a weekly seminar series, a weekly student-faculty journal club, monthly student research talks, and an annual retreat. First-year students have a unique opportunity to meet faculty in the program and learn about their research at weekly “pizza talks.” Students also participate in a wide range of other activities on campus, such as seminars, journal clubs, happy hours, and retreats geared to specific areas of interests.
BMS Retreat
The BMS Program holds an annual retreat every fall at Granlibakken Resort in Lake Tahoe. The retreat is an excellent opportunity for students and faculty to share their research and get to know each other in a more informal setting. The retreat is also the home of the annual "skits" hosted by the second year class. In recent years the retreat was combined with the CVRI, Cancer Center, or Immunology Retreats. This year, BMS will hold its own retreat so that each of the eight thematic areas can be fully represented.
The 2008 Retreat will take place October 4-6, 2008..
BMS Seminar Series
The BMS Program sponsors a weekly seminar series: the Seminars in Biomedical Sciences. These seminars attract renowned faculty from all over the world to present cutting-edge research related to human health and disease. The seminar is held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesdays in N-225 during the academic year, and is open to the entire community.

BMS Journal Club
The weekly BMS Student-Faculty Journal Club is held on Thursdays at noon in N-225. Each week, a first- or second-year BMS student and a faculty member present recent articles of broad interest to the biomedical research community.

BMS Student Research Talks (SRTs)
On the first Wednesday of each month, students are invited to hear two upper-level students (typically in their third year) present about their ongoing research projects over dinner. These student research talks (SRTs) allow students to hear about their peers’ work, ask questions, and provide feedback in an informal setting.
BMS Pizza Talks
During the first year, students meet for dinner on Thursday evenings each week to hear two faculty members discuss their research. This event provides an informal atmosphere for students to get to know the faculty in the program, to learn about their careers, and to explore current projects ongoing in their laboratories. The talks also serve as a useful way for first-year students to find out about potential laboratory rotations.

Retreats
All BMS students will be able to select retreats they would like to attend from the following:
The retreats provide an opportunity for getting to know new students, postdocs, and faculty members in an informal setting, and for hearing about recent research directions in laboratories of Program members. All students are expected to attend at least one retreat. Continuing students are encouraged to present their ongoing research in informal posters.
